Tip Top Shape Tip #4: Declutter and Decorate!

This seems obvious, but it’s always a good reminder to declutter your home! Most of us are guilty for owning more than we need and the little extra here and there really adds up. Don’t wait until you’re moving or selling your home to clear things out, the time is now. It can feel overwhelming at times and because we don’t know where to start we often don’t start at all. But decluttering is so worth it! You’ll enjoy your home more, and chances are you’ll find you’re sitting on some cash too. Consider having a garage sale or posting your extra stuff on a buy/sell site. If you don’t want to take the time to sell your extra items there are plenty of donation locations around our area.

Decluttering is important when listing a home for sale, too. I’ve teamed up with Rachel, of ReCreated, to help my clients when they’re preparing to put their house on the market. Rachel has an eye for design and spends a couple hours in my client’s home before they list. She gives them advice on how to best show their home. I’ve asked her to share a few tips about decluttering and decorating.
1. Identify the room’s purpose. There are times when a room is being used for more than it’s intended purpose. As a result it can be overfilled with furniture and decor. Define the identity of the room and remove any unnecessary furniture. Opening up the room will make it feel bigger.
2. Skip the small stuff. When shopping for home decor, so many of us pick the small or less expensive item, because we all love a good deal right. But that usually leaves us with a lot of small things that create a feeling of clutter. Instead consider a larger item… hold off buying the small things for a time to save up for the large one. It makes a statement in the room and having a focal point is key when decorating.
3. Just because you own it, doesn’t mean you have to use it. Often times when I’m staging a room, I feel like I should use everything that the home owner has set out to re-used, as well as the things I’ve brought to fill it all in. In the end I stand back, look and take at least 3-4 things away. Less is more, and just because you already own it, doesn’t mean it has to be used.

Rachel’s RealEstate partnership with me is a very small portion of what she does. Rachel spends most of her “ReCreated” time designing and making home decor, clocks and furniture. In celebration of decluttering and falling in love with our homes again, we’ve partnered to give away a custom clock! The winner will be able to choose from any of ReCreated’s clocks, value up to $100.

Tip Top Shape Tip #3 + A Giveaway

Tip #3: Freshen up the inside! Read below to learn how you could win a free carpet cleaning, worth $150!

Let’s take the focus inside! Whether it’s preparing to show your home when you’re selling, or just wanting to love your home again, there are a couple of key ways to freshen up the inside. And bonus? They’re not expensive! You don’t have to take out a loan to change the look of your home. Fresh paint and clean carpet go a long way.

Let’s talk paint. If you want the best bang-for-your-buck transformation then head down to your local paint store and pick up a few gallons. You’ll give your home a major facelift with nothing more than a simple can of paint and a roller. Perhaps the color on the walls is out of date or is no longer a hue you like? Changing the paint color on your walls is the simplest way to transform a space, and you won’t have to throw down mad cash! With all the paint + primer combos there are no longer excuses! Need the extra push to make a change? Right now Ace Hardware and True Value are doing BOGO memorial day specials on paint.

Now onto carpet: did you know it’s recommended that you have your carpets cleaned once a year? Sometimes I want to have them cleaned just so they look new again, but there are other, more important benefits too. Carpet cleaning can extend the life of your carpet and improve your family’s health. A dirty carpet can retain air pollutants, pet dander, dirt, dust and other allergens. So whether you get your carpets cleaned to get out the pet stains, or because you’re wanting them to look fresh and new (like me!), by having them cleaned and spending some money now you’ll enjoy a clean carpet with a longer life and less pollutants!

I’ve hired Gavin from Carpet Care cleaners many times and highly recommend his business to my family, friends and clients. If they can get my carpets clean after the Price boys have destroyed them they must be good! We’ve partnered together to give away a FREE 3 room carpet cleaning, worth $150!

BONUS: Gavin is offering $20 off to anyone who books online through his webpage: and uses the phrase “Julie gave me a 20” in the notes section when booking!

Tip Top Shape Tip #2 + another GIVEAWAY!

This week’s prize is worth $130!

Tip Top Shape Tip #2

Get your yard in Shape!

Winter is over (finally!) and signs of new life are everywhere. It’s time to clean up the yard to give it a strong start for the upcoming growing year. Time spent right now will make a greater impact than a month from now. Here are some areas to focus on as you get your yard into shape:
-pick up branches & leaves that are leftover from fall and winter
-aerate and dethatch your lawn, if needed
-prune back your trees and bushes, especially those that are growing against the house (this is important for keepings pests away too)
-remove dead plants from your beds
-spruce up your beds with new mulch
-apply fertilizer, grub control and weed control to your lawn

Speaking of signs of new life everywhere, spring also brings the return of ants, spiders and other pests! Treating pests early in the year prevents infestation later. A perimeter treatment is a great offensive play you can make in the fight against pests. I’ve teamed up with Environmental Pest Control, Inc. and we’re giving away a FREE exterior spider spray, a value of $130! Environmental Pest Control will come and brush away nests and webs from your home, including window frames, door frames, porch lights and under eaves. Then they will go back and spray all of those areas as well as the perimeter of your home. Taking the time to treat against pests now will make a big difference in the months ahead.

Keeping your home in Tip-Top-Shape! Tip #1 + Giveaway!

Tip #1: Keep your roof and gutters clean!

[Giveaway at the bottom]

Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements! With all the rain we get in the Pacific Northwest it’s common for moss to grow on roofs. Established moss can be dangerous because it collects and holds water much like a sponge. That water can wick up underneath your shingles and lead to saturation of your sheathing below. It also makes your roof unsafe to walk on because it’s so slick. Gutters are important too. They control the flow of rain water off your roof (remember, we get a lot of rain!), and a clogged gutter leads to water back ups, which can cause a leaky roof and encourage the rotting of the fascia and soffit.

This spring, don’t neglect your roof and gutters. Clear your roof of moss and leaves, and your gutters of leaves, branches and tennis balls! Doing so not only freshens the look of your home, it often lengthens the life of your roof! A small investment into a professional roof cleaning can keep you from spending thousands on a new roof. I’ve partnered with Jeff at Centsible Services, the authorized contractor for Roof Shampoo in Whatcom and Skagit, to give away a free roof shampoo (or service of your choice, up to $350!!!). Jeff will come and clean your roof using a soft, gentle, low pressure water wash that is environmentally friendly. The results are immediate! He also cleans siding and concrete surfaces, too.
